How a sleepy suburb became one of the Bay Area's most exciting restaurant towns
Briefly

Pizzeria Cardamomo, opened by husband-and-wife duo Momo Farouq and Sarika Batra, has surprised owners with exceptional patronage, resulting in running out of supplies shortly after opening. The restaurant has become part of a burgeoning food scene in downtown Redwood City, attracting both established eateries and new ventures. Farouq, originally from Morocco and trained in Italy, aims to recreate an Italian dining experience in their new location, which benefits from affordable lease rates and a unique ambiance.
"We ran out of cloth napkins!" said a surprised Batra, who borrowed some from nearby Donato Enoteca. Business at Cardamomo was so good - twice as busy as projected."
Farouq and Batra turned away dozens of diners that Friday night. The couple is already contemplating a second pizza oven to meet potential demand once online ordering and delivery commence.
Longtime downtown Redwood City favorites like Gourmet Haus Staudt and Milagros have been joined by myriad newcomers, drawn to the suburb for reasons personal and practical.
Momo's vision was to have something that felt like his place in Italy," Batra elaborated. They chose Redwood City due to its appealing site and lower lease rates.
