In April, Louis Gerstner published an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal, 'Remote Work is a Leadership Killer', asserting that if we wanted to continue to develop effective leadership, we needed to get everyone back in the office. The claim was based on the idea that the only way to develop effective leadership skills was to create regular opportunities for role modeling.
Leadership in a hybrid world requires a slightly different skillset or, rather, the same skills applied in a different way. If we're able to source, select and onboard new employees without seeing them in real life, we have to be able to give them developmental feedback in that environment as well.
Positive relationships in the workplace are a key measure of positive culture and employee engagement. While it's true that it's more difficult to develop a strong collegial relationship over a zoom call, it is possible. It just takes a little longer and requires more intentionality.
