Why Your Frontline Employee Turnover Is High
Briefly

The HBR IdeaCast episode discusses how low-wage workers are often misunderstood by executives concerning their reasons for leaving. Joseph Fuller and Manjari Raman, who researched the issue, indicate that retention is less about wages and more about how workers are treated. They underscore the importance of mentorship, clear career paths, and effective job design. Through surveys of executives and low-wage workers, the research highlights serious misconceptions in the business community that could hinder efforts to retain these vital employees.
For your research, you looked at some broad data on jobs and wages. You also surveyed executives, and you also surveyed more than a thousand low-wage workers.
What we've done in our project on a number of occasions is to try to understand simultaneously the way business leaders' view of an issue or a problem and also the way employees or job seekers see that same problem.
