Between 1966 and 1970, an unidentified photographer amassed a rich collection of images from pivotal moments in 1960s counterculture. Bill Delzell of SpeakLocal came across the archive in 2022 and now seeks to uncover the photographer's identity. The collection includes over 8,400 images, featuring key events like protests against the Vietnam War and Grateful Dead concerts. With much of the film unprocessed, it suggests the photographer may have been an amateur. This archive raises important questions about the value of art independent of its creator’s identity or recognition.
Anonymous works like these inspire questions about worth and merit when so often, we ascribe value based, in part, on the creator. This work really forces us to look at all of that and question what is the value of the work.
I have no interest in owning the work... I just have an interest in discovering who the photographer is.
