Apple once again rumored to partner with Intel for chip manufacturing
"In early December, we first heard that Apple was talking to Intel about chip manufacturing, in a bid to diversify its suppliers and not be entirely dependent on TSMC. Now a new research note by GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu reiterates this rumor. Pu says he expects Intel to begin making Apple chips using its future 14A process, which is going to be ready for mass production in 2028."
"This means Intel will supply Apple with a portion of its A21 and A22 chips. That said, TSMC is expected to remain Apple's main chip supplier. Like TSMC, Intel will only be fabricating the chips, it won't aid in designing them. Alongside the iPhone chips, Intel could also be making some chips for select Mac and iPad models, according to Ming-Chi Kuo. He predicts Intel will be making the lower-end M series chips as early as mid-2027."
Apple is reportedly exploring Intel as an additional chip foundry to reduce dependence on TSMC. GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu expects Intel to start manufacturing Apple chips on its 14A process, with mass production readiness in 2028. Intel would supply a portion of Apple’s A21 and A22 smartphone chips while TSMC remains the main supplier. Intel’s role would be fabrication only, not chip design. Separately, Ming-Chi Kuo predicts Intel could produce lower-end M-series chips for some Mac and iPad models as early as mid-2027. These moves would diversify Apple’s supply chain and add foundry capacity.
