'Grand Horizons' at Altarena Playhouse explores the theme of gray divorce, highlighting the struggles of aging couples as they navigate the decision to separate after decades of marriage. Playwright Bess Wohl's sharp and witty dialogue provides comic relief while addressing the emotional challenges faced by the characters, specifically Bill and Nancy. Their adult children grapple with the news of their divorce, with varying degrees of understanding. This production reflects a growing trend in society as more older adults seek independence and redefine love, raising profound questions about relationships in later life.
A word to the wise, be careful when gazing upon Tom Curtin's delightfully homey set. You might think you've taken a wrong turn and ended up in one of those senior communities.
According to Altarena Director Angela Mason, The phenomenon known as gray divorce' has grown in the last 20 years where now more than a third of all U.S. adults going through a divorce are over age 55.
Yet alongside the very funny scenes and laugh-out-loud moments, we also see the poignancy of people wrestling with what it means to be in a relationship where love, commitment and honest communication can break down over time.
Miss Wohl started her career as an actor and certainly knows how to write witty dialogue, which flows seamlessly with the show's exploration of aging and relationships.
