Burnout is not just a catchphrase or a feeling of tiredness or stress. It is a state of exhaustion, a condition affecting millions globally. Usually caused by chronic workplace stress, burnout leads to emotional exhaustion, detachment from work or personal responsibility, feeling unworthy, and loss of sense of achievement.
In normal stress, an individual experiences episodes of high stress that eventually subside, whereas in burnout, an individual feels stuck and has nowhere to go. In stress, because of too many tasks, a person feels overwhelmed, while in burnout, a person feels empty and unmotivated.
Stress is like a sprint, intense but for a short duration, whereas burnout is more like a marathon without a finish line, leaving the individual feeling exhausted and unmotivated.
Burnout manifests through early signs, including persistent tiredness, insomnia linked to work thoughts, irritability, poor concentration, mood swings, and physical aches.
