Unmasking With ADHD
Briefly

ADHD masking is the process by which individuals with ADHD subconsciously or consciously hide their symptoms to conform to societal norms and appear neurotypical. While it can serve as a useful strategy in certain settings, such as academic or professional environments, chronic masking can result in emotional exhaustion, anxiety, and mental health challenges. Founder Russell Barkley highlighted that about a third of those with ADHD engage in this behavior. Recognizing and gradually unmasking can help these individuals live more authentically and alleviate the mental burden associated with sustained masking.
ADHD masking, also known as impression management, involves hiding ADHD symptoms to appear neurotypical, which can lead to mental health issues and delayed diagnosis.
Chronic masking may provide short-term relief in certain settings but can result in long-term distress and exhaustion, suggesting the need for gradual unmasking.
