BIG's Unique Design For Gelephu International Airport Connects Passengers With Bhutan's Natural Beauty - Yanko Design
Briefly

Gelephu International Airport, designed by BIG and NACO, aims to enhance travel in Bhutan with a unique diagrid structure crafted from laminated timber. Set to open in 2029, this airport will serve 5.5 million passengers annually by 2065, nestled near the Bhutan-Indian border amidst stunning natural landscapes. The design reflects the region’s mountain ranges and incorporates intricate carvings by local artisans. Key elements include a spacious arrival plaza, distinct zones with native plant life, and an indoor courtyard known as the Forest Spine, merging nature with modern travel experiences.
"For the Gelephu International Airport, we wanted to create an experience that feels deeply Bhutanese - calm, welcoming, and connected to nature," said BIG partner Frederik Lyng.
The glulam framework will be adorned with intricate woodcarvings of dragons, crafted by local artisans to evoke Kachen, the decorative wooden columns found in traditional Bhutanese architecture.
