A Northwestern study evaluated the effects of three different diets over three days: juice-only, juice with whole foods, and whole plant-based foods. The juice-only group experienced negative impacts on gut health, increasing harmful gut bacteria associated with inflammation. Contrarily, those consuming whole foods showed beneficial changes in their microbiome. While juices offer vitamins, they lack fiber, commonly deemed essential for gut health. The study emphasizes that natural detoxification through liver and kidney function is sufficient, and real, fiber-rich foods are better for overall health than juice cleanses.
The results were not great for the juice-only crew. Their bad gut bacteria increased, linked to inflammation and gut permeability, contradicting wellness claims.
Juice isn't the villain here; it provides essential vitamins, but omits fiber, crucial for maintaining a healthy gut and overall wellness.
