The Deeply Spiced Meatballs That Call Back to Haiti
Briefly

Elsy Dinvil, raised in Jeremie, Haiti, learned cooking from her mother, who taught her the importance of preparation. After her mother's death in 2018, Dinvil self-published her e-book, "Cooking With My Mother: Your Guide to Haitian Homecooking," demonstrating pride in her heritage despite her mother's illiteracy. Now a well-regarded figure in Portland's food scene, she shares traditional Haitian recipes through her company Creole Me Up and has collaborated with noted chef Gregory Gourdet in his culinary ventures, preserving and promoting Haitian culture in America.
My mother couldn't even write her own name in Creole, so I know she'd be proud of me writing a book in another language.
Based in Oregon since the 1990s, Ms. Dinvil has become a beloved member of Portland's food scene, sharing homey Haitian dishes.
Ms. Dinvil's mother died in 2018, two years before Ms. Dinvil self-published the recipe and its story in her e-book.
She's even worked with the award-winning Haitian chef and author Gregory Gourdet helping with his first pop-ups.
