Doomscrolling isn't really novel. It is actually just a modern variant of a common psychological response to anxiety called rumination.
The problem with rumination (and doomscrolling by extension) is that it is only a temporary relief for your anxiety. While you're thinking through your problem (or reading other people's thoughts), you feel a bit better, because you feel like you're taking an action to address your anxiety. In actuality, you're easing a symptom, not addressing the underlying cause.
