I tried 6 different brands of syrup from the grocery store. It's worth paying a little extra for the big names.
Briefly

The Market Pantry pancake syrup from Target was my least favorite; while it wasn't overly sweet, it had a bland taste with a bit of a bitter aftertaste.
Mrs. Butterworth's stood out for its rich flavor but disappointed with a thinner texture that didn't match its 'thick 'n' rich' label.
Kroger's syrup was the sweetest but lacked depth and complexity, presenting a very thin consistency and a flavor that didn't satisfy.
After tasting various brands, I found Mrs. Butterworth's had indulgent notes despite its thin texture, making it a strong contender in the syrup comparison.
