A recent survey reveals that 25% of job applicants have lied or exaggerated on applications, with Gen Z leading this trend at about 47%. The survey indicates that common areas of falsification include work experience (22.97%) and job responsibilities (28.38%). Amanda Augustine, a career coach, explains that many young applicants feel pressured to enhance their qualifications due to limited experience. The data points to a generational issue wherein younger individuals may feel desperate to make a strong impression to secure interviews because of perceived employment barriers.
You hear so much of people complaining about this big resume hole their applications have fallen into, and it's out of sheer desperation that they're trying to enhance their experience in a way that will hopefully land them at least that interview.
I think it's that sentiment across all generations, but especially this younger generation that has not navigated the job market in a traditional fashion and may not have the robust experiences that employers often look for.
