Recent reports reveal that Google is increasingly using AI-generated Overviews containing numerous links and citations, often exceeding 60. While this may initially seem beneficial, the overwhelming number of links can discourage users from clicking on any, especially when their queries are answered in the Overview itself. Industry experts argue that this format creates a challenge for site owners, who receive no data on traffic driven from these citations. There's a call for Google to offer insights into how these citations perform in Search Console, which remains uncertain.
If the AI Overview had maybe 3 to 5 links, sure, maybe a searcher will accidently click on one of those links. But an AI Overview with 40, 50, 60 plus links is way too overwhelming.
Google should provide data within Search Console for AIO link engagement, which would help site owners understand traffic resulting from AI Overview citations.
