Brexit: Government suffers defeats over Retained EU Law Bill

Liberal Democrat peer Lord Fox specifically praised minister Lord Callanan: "All through the grinding committee stage he stuck poker-faced to the party line, but then, seemingly, he sprang into action... and, using his not inconsiderable powers of persuasion on the secretary of state, he ensured that the whole government position flipped 180 degrees."

Why has the government changed its mind over EU law plans?

The government has abandoned its plans for thousands of EU-era laws to expire automatically. The laws, which were agreed by the UK when it was a member of the bloc, remained in place after Brexit but were supposed to be repealed or reformed by the end of 2023.What was the government's plan? When the UK left the EU in 2020, EU laws that had applied in the UK before this date were kept in place to "maintain legal continuity and certainty".

Sir Mark Rowley defends Met officers who protected King's historic Coronation

T he Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III and Her Majesty Queen Camilla was an historic moment of huge national significance. We are proud to have successfully ensured its safety and security despite the most challenging, fast-moving and complex policing picture we have ever encountered for a national celebration.

UKIP on brink of wipeout after losing all seats in local elections

Abandon ship: does this symbol of slavery shame Manchester and its football clubs?

I got my first Manchester City football badge when I was a little boy.It was gorgeous a golden ship in full sail on the top half of the crest, the red rose of Lancashire on the bottom half, all framed in sky blue. The ship made a huge impression. It reminded me of the Blue Peter badge and pirates.Pirates were exciting.
