After spending months anticipating a holiday, a week spent packing and doing last minute admin, and several stressful hours going through check-in and security at the airport, the very last thing you want to hear is that your flight has been axed. Cancelled flights are far more common in some UK airports than others. And now, flight compensation site AirAdvisor has looked at data from the Civil Aviation Authority to reveal the cancellation rates across 20 of the UK's biggest airports in 2025. It also compared it to their rates in 2024 to figure out where cancellations are easing, and where they're getting worse.
A major London airport has been given the greenlight to officially expand. Planning permission has been approved to allow Stansted Airport to increase its annual passenger cap from 30 million to 51 million people. The busy airport will be allowed to cater for more passengers without widening its current boundaries or adding a new runway. This means the number of flights Stansted is already allowed to run will stay the same.
A major motorway ground to a halt after a serious collision near a busy airport. The M11 in Essex was closed northbound between J6 (M25) and J7 (Harlow) earlier this afternoon as Essex Police and National Highways officers attended the scene. Three vehicles, two cars and a van, were reportedly involved in the collision. It remains unclear if anyone was seriously injured.
Essex Police began an investigation after his ex made a complaint several weeks ago that he allegedly attempted to rape her during their relationship. Officers were alerted to the footballer's location and travelled to Stansted to arrest him. The household name, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was taken to a local police station where his fingerprints, DNA sample and mugshot were taken.
All trains into London Stansted Airport have been cancelled or disrupted on Wednesday morning due to signalling issues, National Rail has confirmed. A fault with the signalling system has affected CrossCountry services between Birmingham New Street and Stansted, and Greater Anglia services to and from the airport and London Liverpool Street. The disruption is expected to continue until 08:00 BST, National Rail said, while there are also substantial delays on the M11 and M25 in Essex, potentially impacting passengers.
