Stansted Airport's contactless train ticketing delayed as Greater Anglia hits software snag
"Some 30 stations will still go contactless in a couple of weeks time, but 20 stations operated by Greater Anglia, including Stansted Airport (and c2c's Southend Airport) are being delayed until next Summer. That'll mean the big red warning signs at London Liverpool Street station telling people not to use contactless payments will have to remain in place for a few more months than expected."
"We understand how frustrating it is when improvements like this are delayed, and I am very sorry for the disappointment this will cause some of our customers. It is essential, however, that contactless ticketing works reliably from day one. Our teams are working closely with our partners to complete this work as quickly as possible, and we remain committed to introducing contactless ticketing across these additional stations by summer 2026."
The planned rollout of London-style contactless payments at Stansted Airport has been delayed after encountering software issues. The original plan set contactless pay-as-you-go for 50 stations from 14 December, but fare integration problems on the Greater Anglia route caused a delay for some stations. Pay-as-you-go requires full integration of train company fares with TfL's fare system, and testing identified issues affecting Greater Anglia journeys. Around 30 stations will go live on 14 December, while 20 Greater Anglia-operated stations, including Stansted and c2c's Southend Airport, are postponed until summer 2026. Existing railcard and concession rates remain cheaper until integrated into contactless fares.
