Artificial intelligence (AI) machine learning is making a difference in assistive technology to help restore movement for the paralyzed. A new study in the American Institute of Physics journal APL Bioengineering shows how AI has the potential to restore lower-limb functions in those with severe spinal cord injuries (SCIs) by identifying patterns in brain signals captured noninvasively via electroencephalography (EEG).
PC Liam Newman, 31, is on trial at Southwark Crown Court accused of grievous bodily harm against Mr Sandiford, who was left tetraplegic and is now confined to a wheelchair. Newman had responded with another officer to a report of attempted burglary at a bookmakers in Chigwell Road, Woodford Green, at 5am on April 24 2022. After a chase, Mr Sandiford, 62, was Tasered and fell from a height of 5 to 6ft, sustaining an injury to his spinal cord, prosecutor Irshad Sheikh said Body-worn video footage was played to the jury which showed Mr Sandiford moving across the outbuilding with his back to the camera, and the Taser being pointed and activated, before Mr Sandiford disappears from view.
Attorneys from the Khashayar Law Group, which is representing the family, did not immediately return a call for comment. The family argues in the suit that Amin Noroozi's death was cut short by systematic medical failures at John Muir Health. They called the hospital's actions gross negligence and said the life-threatening complications that led to Amin's death should have been anticipated and treated according to medical protocols.
