Moment Met PC on trial for GBH Tasers man who fell 6ft' and was left paralysed
"PC Liam Newman, 31, is on trial at Southwark Crown Court accused of grievous bodily harm against Mr Sandiford, who was left tetraplegic and is now confined to a wheelchair. Newman had responded with another officer to a report of attempted burglary at a bookmakers in Chigwell Road, Woodford Green, at 5am on April 24 2022. After a chase, Mr Sandiford, 62, was Tasered and fell from a height of 5 to 6ft, sustaining an injury to his spinal cord, prosecutor Irshad Sheikh said Body-worn video footage was played to the jury which showed Mr Sandiford moving across the outbuilding with his back to the camera, and the Taser being pointed and activated, before Mr Sandiford disappears from view."
"In it he said at the time of his Taser activations his intention was to lawfully stop the male, never to cause harm. He said: I'm not sure if any Taser activation connected and was effective. He added: It is clear that throughout the events Mr Sandiford is very keen not to be detained by police. My body-worn video does demonstrate how difficult it is to see any end to the shed roof and the nature of any drop the other side. I have only a basic knowledge of the geography of this area. This is obvious from the efforts made to find out where we were so that the LAS (London Ambulance Service) and other officers could find us."

Sandiford was left tetraplegic and is now confined to a wheelchair. PC Liam Newman, 31, is charged with grievous bodily harm for an allegedly unreasonable use of force. Body-worn video showed Sandiford on the outbuilding with the Taser pointed and activated. Newman said his intent was to lawfully stop the male and that visibility of the roof edge was poor.
