No player will perform perfectly on the field, but there are few as consistently mistake-free as Nico Hoerner at second base. That's especially true on the mental side of the game, where you will almost never see Hoerner goof on a play because he did something he shouldn't do, or failed to do something he should.
Good morning! Yet another infield option is off the board, as the Seattle Mariners acquired All-Star Brendan Donavan in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals yesterday. Perhaps you're still holding out hope for an Isaac Paredes deal, but it's looking increasingly likely that the Red Sox will head into Opening Day with Marcelo Mayer at third and a second base platoon of David Hamilton and Romy Gonzalez.
I like Kristian Campbell and want him to succeed. But I am totally convinced that, if he does, it won't be at second base. Is it harsh to say that he was arguably the worst defensive middle infielder I'd ever seen last season? Maybe I'm still haunted by the routine double play that he flubbed against the Yankees, when he broke the wrong way on a ground ball that was hit just a few feet to his left.
Brendan Donovan has been one of the top trade targets for clubs seeking offensive help. The Royals, Mariners, Pirates, Guardians and Astros have all been tied to the lefty-hitting utilityman at points this offseason. Derrick Goold of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Giants have been in the mix for Donovan as well. Goold lists San Francisco alongside Seattle and Kansas City among the teams that have kept in touch with the Cardinals as they gauge the market. Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox have also talked with the Cards about Donovan, though he's one of myriad star infielders whom Boston has considered.
Second baseman underwent surgery after dislocating his left shoulder with two weeks remaining in the regular season. Meanwhile, the team announced last week that third baseman Brett Harris underwent surgery to repair the UCL in his left thumb (link via Jason Burke of Sports Illustrated). The injuries cloud what were already the two weakest positions in the lineup heading into the winter.
Before landing on the injured list, Schmitt played his way into the starting lineup by excelling in Chapman's absence. In 14 games as Chapman's replacement, Schmitt hit .375/.444/.646 with four homers and 12 RBIs.
