Officers with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration are again parking cars in the bike lane on 10th Avenue, returning like junkies seeking a fix even after the city tore up and repaved the roadway earlier this month. On Monday, with fresh pavement practically still warm, DEA agents' cars still filled the curbside lane between 16th and 17th streets even though it was clearly marked as a bike lane. The cars blocked safe travel for cyclists, forcing them into traffic and close to passing cars.
A group of local disability advocates is making headway on a lawsuit against the City of New York that claims the city's Open Streets program violates the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Federal Judge Eric Komitee will hear oral arguments on Thursday from the plaintiffs, many of whom are members of the ADA-advocacy group Access for All, and the defendants, including the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) and other third-party groups.
Almost two years after the MTA announced it would begin a pilot program using its on-board bus cameras to ticket drivers who block bike lanes, the pilot still hasn't surfaced - and it's unclear if the agency has any plans to make it happen. The state in 2023 expanded the MTA's ability to use its bus-mounted cameras to ticket drivers outside of bus lanes - double parked on bus routes, parked in bus stops and even blocking bike lanes.
The Department of Transportaiton announced on Friday that workers will "begin installing" center-running bus lanes on Brooklyn's diagonal spine between Livingston Street and Fourth Avenue - but buses won't start moving faster on the stretch north of Grand Army Plaza until the fall of 2026, more than full four years after the city first did outreach for the project. The full plan which includes pedestrian bump-outs and bus boarding islands will have to wait until the spring, officials said.
