Grande has described 'Eternal Sunshine' as a concept album, drawing liberally from Michel Gondry's 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.' The 2004 sci-fi film stars Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet as ill-matched lovers who decide to erase their memories of each other, arguably dooming themselves to a never-ending loop of heartbreak.
"Early in the writing and recording process, we realized we had a collection of songs with distinct energies yet equally meaningful to us. It became clear that we wanted to release them as two separate entities both from the same genus: Equus Asinus and Equus Caballus."
We went to expand the concept a bit, and include songs that were (in my opinion) emo-adjacent - as well as making it clear that 'dirt emo' doesn't have to be a specific genre, per se, but more a mood or style in which I perform/reinterpret a song.
