"Inspired by" hardly covers it. How to Make a Killing is a conventional remake, replicating many of its characters and narrative beats, while failing to capture any of its frosty charm - or the trick of having Alec Guinness play eight different characters. Both director and star have shied away from the thrilling moral apathy of the original film's antihero.

They are words imbued with bleak irony and disillusion; a pair of lovers in this movie discover them written in a ravaged church and have difficulty deciphering them, and also cannot decide where their loyalties and future lie as the second world war comes to its chaotic end.
A murderer, a gleefully sadistic rapist, an unapologetic sociopathic who treats human beings as playthings and a menace to every value in moral society. And yet Malcolm McDowell brings him to life with such panache and fun, he is irresistibly charming and likable throughout his horrors. You even feel happy for him at the end when he gets away with the whole thing.

Looking more exhausted than any TV character in recent memory, Mare investigated murders, raised her grandson, and presided over her community with questionable ethics but unfailing care.
