Justin Long transformed his Nice Guy persona by playing morally ambiguous, narcissistic characters with suppressed humanity. He approaches morality as a matter of perception and expresses curiosity about how even violent people rationalize their behavior. Long took on a new role in Night Patrol, portraying Ethan caught between a vampire-infused LAPD cult and rival gangs, with a resurrected father figure leading the force and real-life wrestlers among the lieutenants. The fantastical setting forced Long to find creative approaches to the character while maintaining an inner humanity similar to his previous darker turn.
