The Philadelphia Eagles are hiring Green Bay Packers quarterbacks coach Sean Mannion as their offensive coordinator, the team announced Thursday. He replaces Kevin Patullo in the role. Mannion, 33, was an active player as recently as 2023 with the Minnesota Vikings and Seattle Seahawks. He will become the fifth different playcaller for quarterback Jalen Hurts, who will be entering his seventh NFL season in 2026.
"If you're going to get down to the 1, you might as well get in," said tight end Dallas Goedert, his smile widening. "Because otherwise, you know how we're going to get in." That would be by way of Jalen Hurts, churning in on a wave of momentum generated by his road-grading offensive line, a healthy dose of lower-body strength and, of course, a push of the tush.
Hurts and the Eagles piled on the misery during another defeat for Washington at Northwest Stadium in Week 16. Yet in the process, they also inadvertently did the Commanders a favor, offering a brutal reminder of the significant problem Peters has struggled to fix. It's summed up by this from Next Gen Stats: "Jalen Hurts was pressured on just 4 of 37 dropbacks against Washington, his lowest pressure rate in a game in his career (10.8%)."
It's understandable if his résumé clouds the fact he has been part of the problem. He's a highly accomplished 27-year-old quarterback who has already collected a world championship, two Super Bowl appearances, two Pro Bowl nods and a Super Bowl MVP. He is a force inside the walls of the NovaCare Complex, channeling his inner Nick Saban (Hurts' former college coach at Alabama) to push the standard for excellence ever higher.
Earlier in the calendar year, the Eagles won their second-ever Super Bowl with a lopsided 40-22 victory over the two-time reigning champions. That win came two years after the Chiefs defeated the Eagles in Super Bowl LVII. Sunday's game also made this season the fifth straight in which the two played one another. It was the first time since the 1970 merger that an NFC team and a AFC team met for that many consecutive seasons.
