SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- In preparation for Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints, the San Francisco 49ers have been preparing all week to be without starting quarterback Brock Purdy. On Friday, coach Kyle Shanahan made it official, announcing that Purdy will not play in New Orleans with veteran Mac Jones set to start in his place. Purdy did not practice at all this week as he deals with left shoulder and toe injuries that he suffered in last week's win against the Seattle Seahawks.
"We're not going to truly rule out the possibility of Steve [Avila] being able to go, but fortunately for us, we have established some depth where we've got some guys that if they need to be able to step up, they've shown that they're more than capable of that," McVay said.
Daniels, who rehabbed a torn Achilles on his right leg in the offseason, popped up on the Dolphins' injury report Thursday for an ankle injury on the left leg. He left Thursday's practice early as a limited participant and did not take part in Friday drills. With Daniels good to go, Miami will have its full projected starting offensive line available for Sunday's opener in Indianapolis. From left to right, the team has Patrick Paul, rookie Jonah Savaiinaea, Aaron Brewer, Daniels and Austin Jackson starting.
Alabama wide receiver Ryan Williams is not expected to play against Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday as he works through the protocol from a concussion suffered against Florida State, sources told ESPN's Pete Thamel. Williams, a preseason Associated Press All-American, was helped off the field midway through the fourth quarter of the 31-17 loss last Saturday after his helmet slammed into the ground following his third dropped pass of the game.
"I'm certainly expecting Cam to play," Tomlin said in his weekly news conference Tuesday. "Cam doesn't play a lot in team development over the last several years. My job is to get him in and out of Latrobe, and I've done my job. And so, there are no reservations about his participation or his readiness. I'm sure he's chopping at the bit."
In another hit to the Tennessee Volunteers' secondary, starting cornerback Rickey Gibson III will be out for "an extended period" after injuring his left arm in Saturday's season-opening win against Syracuse. Gibson, a returning starter, left Saturday's game in the second quarter. Coach Josh Heupel did not specify what the injury was or reveal a possible timeline for the return of Gibson, who had 32 tackles, 5 pass breakups and a forced fumble last season, The No. 24 Vols face East Tennessee State on Saturday before hosting No. 5 Georgia on Sept. 13.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Carolina Panthers could be without starting left tackle Ickey Ekwonu for their opener after an emergency appendectomy on Sunday. Coach Dave Canales said Wednesday the status of the sixth pick of the 2022 draft is day-to-day, and likely will be up until the Sept. 7 game at Jacksonville. "We've seen these things turn around in a little over a week,'' Canales said. "It can be longer. It just depends on each individual's body, on how you respond to the surgery, how your body heals the right way.
Cincinnati Bengals starting safety Geno Stone is expected to miss the dress rehearsal against the Washington Commanders due to a soft tissue injury, according to coach Zac Taylor. Stone's injury makes him doubtful for the road preseason game on Aug. 18, having played only four snaps in the preseason opener against the Eagles. Despite his uncertainty for the immediate future, there are no long-term injury concerns for Stone as per coach Taylor.
"Chase, being the hitter that he is, he's very handsy, that top hand is such a big part of his offensive game. It really sets his direction and when you have inflammation in there, you want to avoid any bad habits."
