Signing Justin Turner could provide the New York Yankees with a reliable option to improve their infield depth.
Turner's versatility as a spot starter at third base, and his ability to play first base and DH, makes him a useful backup for Anthony Rizzo and Giancarlo Stanton.
Given a choice between a bedraggled, ill-mannered win and a jut-jawed, morally inviolate loss, you take the win every time. And the historical record will show that the Mets beat the Yankees Wednesday night, prevailing 4-3 in walkoff fashion in the 10th at Citi Field. But if you were watching, you know that "win" is stretching it.
This Day In Dodgers History: Mike Piazza Hits Longest Home Run At Joe Robbie Stadium
In just his third season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Mike Piazza hit the longest home run at Joe Robbie Stadium with a majestic grand slam to center field that traveled 477 feet. The grand slam was Piazza's first of his career and it gave the Dodgers a 4-2 lead over the then-Florida Marlins in the second inning.
Yankees recall Oswaldo Cabrera, send Greg Allen to the IL
Two days ago, in our staff post on Oswaldo Cabrera's demotion among the roster moves to activate Giancarlo Stanton, Josh Donaldson, and Tommy Kahnle, we said this at the end (emphasis mine): This isn't necessarily the end of the road for Oswaldo Cabrera in pinstripes, of course. The good thing is that he remains relatively young with a distinct possibility of returning in the event of further injury since he can play basically anywhere.
With over a third of the 2023 regular season in the books, here are three things we'll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world throughout the day today: 1. Bader to undergo MRI: Yankees center fielder Harrison Bader, who left yesterday's game with right hamstring tightness, is set to undergo an MRI today to determine the severity of the issue.
Harrison Bader drives in 2 in 3-run 8th, Yankees beat Rays 3-2 | amNewYork
ST. PETERSBURG.Fla. (AP) Harrison Bader stayed prepared on his off day for an important moment.Bader flared a two-run single during a three-run eighth inning, and the New York Yankees rallied from a two-run deficit to beat the major league-leading Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 on Saturday. He's a lot of fun to be around.
Despite Arraez's amazing April, Marlins' Player of the Month drought continues
As announced on Wednesday, Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña has been named the National League Player of the Month for April 2023, edging out Miami Marlins second baseman Luis Arraez.Arraez, who was traded from the Minnesota Twins to Miami in exchange for starting pitcher Pablo López and prospect hitter José Salas in January, had perhaps the best March/April in Marlins history.
With Aaron Judge sidelined, the Yankees are looking for offense in every corner of their roster.Let's think about their search for offense through the lens of our This Week in Statcast series, taking a look at a few batted balls from the past week to see what they might unearth and how the Yankees could proceed.
NJ.com | Max Goodman: When Hal Steinbrenner speaks, people listen.Whether you love him or you hate him, hearing what he says is important, and he spoke to the media about a variety of different topics, the first of which regarded whether or not he believed this Yankees team is championship-caliber.The answer?
Yankees 7, Mets 6: Yanks start brief road trip off right
If the New York offenses were struggling coming into tonight, you wouldn't know it by the final score; the first game in this year's Subway Series was a 7-6 dogfight.Neither starter made it out of the fifth inning, as at least one team scored in each of the first six innings. But the end of the game wasn't without histrionics, either; prior to the seventh, Drew Smith became the third pitcher (and third New York pitcher) to be tossed because of excessive stickiness, and Clay Holmes dramatically worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth.
VOTE: The most disappointing Yankees hitter thus far
Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across Major League Baseball.Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in New York Yankees fans and fans across the country.Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys. With Anthony Rizzo in a deep slump and both Aaron Judge and Harrison Bader out of the lineup with injuries, the Yankees' lineup has really been scuffling over the past week.
New York Yankees @ New York Mets: Luis Severino vs. Max Scherzer
After the Yankees and Mets combined to spend nearly a billion dollars in free agency this offseason, it seemed New York might cement its status at the center of the baseball universe.Yet, the Yankees trail the Rays and Orioles - who combined to spend less than $65 million - in the AL East race while the Mets sit four games below .500,
The Yankees have been far from impressive of late.Their recent homestand saw them lose series to the White and Red Sox, with the offense in particular falling flat without Aaron Judge around. The Captain may be out of commission for weeks to come still, so someone (or ideally, a few people) needs to step up in his absence.
Aaron Judge is Yankees' only AL starter in first All-Star voting update
It might only be June 12th, but the 93rd edition of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game is less than a month away.MLB is currently in the voting stage of determining starters, and Phase 1 began at the end of May.Now with close to two weeks of votes in, the league has released its first update on the leaders at each position.
New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox: Clarke Schmidt vs. Brayan Bello
The long wait for a Yankees vs. Red Sox matchup in 2023 has been rewarded with a tense series, and on Sunday Night Baseball, both sides will be targeting a knockout blow in the rubber match of this three-game affair. The opening two contests have been marked by solid pitching throughout, with a total of 10 runs scored by both teams.
New York Yankees vs. Chicago White Sox (game 2): Randy Vasquez vs. Mike Clevinger
The Yankees dropped the first game of today's twin bill 6-5, their second one-run loss in as many games. With a largely-untested rookie on the mound and a volatile offense without Aaron Judge, they'll face an uphill battle in an attempt to salvage their series against the White Sox in the nightcap of the doubleheader.
Hendriks gets 1st save, Giolito tosses 6 hitless innings as White Sox edge Yankees 3-2
NEW YORK (AP) - Liam Hendriks earned his first save since returning from cancer, Lucas Giolito pitched six hitless innings and the Chicago White Sox beat the New York Yankees 3-2 on Tuesday night for their season-high fourth straight victory.Isiah Kiner-Falefa ended Chicago's combined no-hit bid with a two-out RBI double in the seventh off reliever Joe Kelly on a ball that fell between center fielder Luis Robert Jr. and left fielder Andrew Benintendi, allowing Willie Calhoun to score.
New York Yankees vs. Chicago White Sox: Clarke Schmidt vs. Lucas Giolito
After a successful West Coast swing, the Yankees can continue to climb the AL East table with a series against the scuffling White Sox.Chicago sits at 26-35, fourth place in the miserable AL Central, but somehow just 5.5 games out of first - actually closer to first than the 36-25 Yankees! The big story of the game is not actually going to be the game itself, but the continued absence of Aaron Judge.
The White Sox learned from their previous Tigers series by sweeping Detroit this past weekend. The Yankees are also winning, and sit well better than .500.What will this series look like?Emily Nyman of the Breaking Balls Podcast joins me for a preview of the White Sox road trip to Yankee Stadium. The American League East is a wild place, where every team is better than .500
FanGraphs | Esteban Rivera: Me, playing checkers when describing Harrison Bader's defense: "He's really good.Seems to get to everything.Really good for my mental health."Our own Esteban Rivera, playing chess when describing Darth Bader roaming the center field galaxy at Yankee Stadium: this article for FanGraphs.
Willie Calhoun's turnaround has been a delight to watch
The turnaround of Willie Calhoun has been entertaining to watch. While many of his star teammates have made trips to the injured list for various reasons, he has stayed on the field. In fact, he has even hit in the middle of the lineup and performed well!Don't get me wrong, it has been weird to see him batting fourth and fifth on a team with multiple hitters on Hall-of-Fame tracks.
Yahoo! Sports | Phillip Martinez: One of the side effects of Aaron Judge's toe injury is the possibility of more outfield time for Giancarlo Stanton, but Aaron Boone may be reining those thoughts in.The Yankee manager spoke ahead of the series opener with the Red Sox yesterday - a game Stanton DH'd in - and recommitted to the team's approach of getting Stanton work pregame and monitoring how his body responds before building him into the outfield rotation.
Yankees takeaways from Thursday's 3-0 Game 2 win over White Sox, including Randy Vasquez's first career win
The Yankees scored just enough runs behind Randy Vasquez to beat the Chicago White Sox, 3-0, in the second game of Thursday's doubleheader.Takeaways - Randy Vasquez was on the bump for his second career start and was better than his first. He walked and gave up a single in the first inning, but then retired 15 straight batters into the sixth inning when he ran into some more trouble.
5 things to watch as Yankees take on Red Sox in three-games series in the Bronx
Here are five things to watch as the Yankees take on the Red Sox in the Bronx this weekend... 1.Through the haze The New York City area has been in a haze this week due to smoke from wildfires up in Canada. The Yankees played through it in Tuesday's series opener against the White Sox, a 3-2 loss, but Wednesday's game was postponed due to the deteriorating air quality in the area.
Yankees' Luis Severino struggles again, offense falters in loss to White Sox
NEW YORK - With Aaron Judge on the injured list, the Yankees desperately need the rest of their roster to step up.In Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader against the White Sox, a few outfielders in pinstripes did their part, taking advantage of an opportunity. The rest of the Yankees' offense - and their struggling starting pitcher - did not.
Rangers rout Yankees 15-2 as Nestor Cortes allows first-inning grand slam
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - hit a first-inning grand slam against Nestor Cortes, Nathanial Lowe and Adolis García added home runs off the All-Star, and the Texas Rangers routed the Yankees 15-2 Sunday and sent slumping New York to its sixth loss in eight games.Cortes (3-2) had the worst outing of his Yankees career, allowing seven runs and five hits in 4 2/3 innings along with four of New York's eight walks.
Who are the 2023 New York Yankees? That is a question I have been asking myself since the season began.Over 60 games into the season and I am still lacking clarity.Maybe it is less about my indecision and more about what the Yankees have provided on the field. As you parse through the intricacies of this season you find a mixed bag of results, and maybe that's just what the Yankees are.
Yankees 3, White Sox 0: Brilliance from Randy Vasquez helps avoid sweep
After a harrowing starting pitching experience in the first game of the doubleheader, the Yankees needed rookie Randy Vásquez to step up in a big way.The 24-year-old righty rose to the task, pitching 5.2 scoreless innings in just his second big league start.Ron Marinaccio was nails coming out of the bullpen while home runs from Gleyber Torres and Billy McKinney proved just enough to secure the 3-0 victory and avoid a sweep at the hands of the White Sox.
Yankees At-Bat of the Week: Giancarlo Stanton (6/6)
I'm always unsure what version of Giancarlo Stanton we're going to see when he returns from injury. He could come back fully healthy and taking fantastic swings, or he could come back and show that he doesn't have his legs under him. This time around, it's clear that he is healthy and feeling like the best version of himself.
Yankees place Aaron Judge on the 10-day IL; select Billy McKinney
No good deed goes unpunished.Seriously.Aaron Judge's spectacular catch in Los Angeles on Saturday has ultimately resulted in the superstar heading back to the injured list, as Josh reported Tuesday night. On Wednesday afternoon, the Yankees officially placed Judge on the 10-day IL, retroactive to June 4th.
Oswald Peraza needs to be included in the Yankees' short-term plans
Before spring training, the Yankees let it be clear that Oswald Peraza and Anthony Volpe were going to compete for the shortstop gig.The latter won, fair and square, and Peraza's future in the franchise became murky. If the first two months of the season have taught us something, however, is that spring training stats come with a lot of asterisks, and regular season performance is a much better way to evaluate skill whether it is in the majors or in Triple-A.
The West Coast was good to the Yankees in terms of results, featuring two series wins against the Mariners and Dodgers.Their two losses over those six games were differing varieties of frustrating - an extra-inning shutout loss and a blowout from the first inning, respectively - but the remainder of the games were strongly in their favor almost the whole way through.
New York Daily News | Gary Phillips: Aaron Judge really can do it all, with his bullpen-door-shattering running catch Saturday the latest highlight in a season full of them. After the snag, which put a permanent dent in the door, Aaron Boone complimented the Yankee captain on the field and his teammates were quick to praise the game's best player in the clubhouse after the victory.
Brusdar Graterol fielding error proves costly for Dodgers once again
(Ashley Landis / Associated Press)
When Brusdar Graterol looks in the mirror, you'd swear he sees Omar Vizquel - not because there is any physical resemblance between the 6-foot-1, 265-pound Dodgers reliever and the 5-9, 180-pound shortstop and 11-time Gold Glove Award winner, but because Graterol fancies himself a defender capable of making jaw-dropping plays.
Dodgers Highlights: Offense Explodes, Kershaw Dominates as LA Wins Series Opener Over Yankees
The Los Angeles Dodgers took the series opener over the New York Yankees on Friday night, 8-4, behind a dominant performance by the LA offense and the LA ace.Clayton Kershaw got the win and earned it, while Yankees starter Luis Severino got the loss - and he definitely earned it, too.Let's get into the highlights of an action-packed game.
Multiple Yankees Stars Set to Rejoin Team Against Dodgers in LA
The New York Yankees are getting healthy at the right time (well not for Dodger fans). As the team travels to Los Angeles to take on the Dodgers this weekend, they're getting three key contributors back.Giancarlo Stanton, who's been out since April 15, is traveling to Los Angeles for the weekend series.
This Day In Dodgers History: Mark McGwire Hits Home Run Out Of Dodger Stadium
On May 22, 1999, Mark McGwire became the third player to hit a home run out of Dodger Stadium.McGwire began his day with a solo shot off Darren Dreifort in the first inning to give the St. Louis Cardinals an early 1-0 lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers, however, would respond with a five-spot in the bottom half of the inning.
New York Yankees @ Los Angeles Dodgers: Domingo German vs. Bobby Miller
After winning a series in Seattle and splitting the first two in LA, the Yankees will look to wrap up their west coast road trip tonight win a win.Yesterday saw the Yankees win 6-3 over the Dodgers and a win tonight would see them take both series before returning home on Tuesday. For tonight's game, the Yankees will send Domingo Germán to the mound.
Yankees 4, Dodgers 1: German's gem powers Bombers to win
The Yankees were always going to have a bit of a tougher time in this Sunday night matchup against the Dodgers simply due to the fact that Aaron Judge was out. After crashing into the wall in Saturday's game, the Yankees opted to hold Judge out of this game due to a sore foot/toe.However, they were also up against it thanks to the pitching of Bobby Miller.
Yankees @ Dodgers - June 4, 2023: Bobby Miller meets Sunday Night Baseball - Dodgers Digest
It's the first of three consecutive Sunday Night Baseball games for the New York Yankees, with the first coming from Dodger Stadium as the Dodgers and Yankees close out their series with a deciding third game. After the Dodgers jumped out to a big lead against Luis Severino on Friday, the Yankees put up four runs against Michael Grove and held on for the victory yesterday.
Yankees @ Dodgers June 3, 2023: Grove returns as the Dodgers look for a series win on Fox - Dodgers Digest
The Dodgers wisely employed the "score six runs in the first inning" strategy last night, as they batted around and hit Luis Severino hard early.Clayton Kershaw bounced back from a rough May with a strong seven sharp innings, and the Dodgers took game one against the Yankees and kept pace with the Arizona Diamondbacks (what).
Recap: Mookie Betts Leads Home Run Barrage, Clayton Kershaw Bounces Back In Dodgers' Win Against Yankees
The highly-anticipated series between two historic rivals quickly turned into a lopsided affair as the Los Angeles Dodgers hit four home runs en route to slugging their way to an 8-4 win over the New York Yankees.Mookie Betts got the Dodgers off to a roaring start with the 41st leadoff home run of his career.
Yankees 4, Dodgers 8: Nightmare first inning dooms New York
Gleyber Torres lined the first pitch of the game into left-center for a single, and that was the closest thing the Yankees had to momentum all night.Luis Severino was dreadful in his third start of the season, and the only New York hitters to make an impact were Josh Donaldson and Giancarlo Stanton, fresh off the IL.
Clayton Kershaw shines in Dodgers win after recent struggles, Sisters comments
(Gary Coronado/Los Angeles Times)
When Clayton Kershaw took the mound Friday night, the typically regimented rotation of his world was suddenly spinning upside down.Off the field, the 35-year-old was under an unusually intense spotlight, thrusting himself into the middle of the Dodgers recent Pride Night controversy after publicly disagreeing with the team's decision to honor the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence - and pushing for the club's relaunch of Christian Faith and Family Day - earlier in the week.
Dodgers 8, Yankees 4: Explosive 1st & a quartet of homers backs Kershaw to start series - Dodgers Digest
With a day to prepare thanks to an off day, the Dodgers got their series against the visiting Yankees off to an ideal start. They provided a six-run cushion in the 1st and basically coasted from there to an 8-4 victory.Fun.====== The game got off to about the best start possible for the Dodgers against Luis Severino, and things got rolling immediately, as Mookie Betts parked his 14th homer to left to start the festivities.
NorthJersey.com| Pete Caldera: The Yankees may have lost the series opener against the Dodgers Friday night, but the contest saw Giancarlo Stanton and Josh Donaldson mark their returns from injury in emphatic style.Donaldson left the yard twice while Stanton homered and drew a walk to account for all four of the Bombers' runs.
Yankees Rivalry Roundup: O's extend lead with late homer
The Yankees got blitzed by the Dodgers in their series opener, giving up six runs in the first inning. It was basically over from there, though Josh Donaldson and Giancarlo Stanton had good showings in their return to the lineup at least.Meanwhile, their rivals were active before things even kicked off on the West Coast - aside from the Rays and Red Sox, who got rained out.
New York Yankees @ Los Angeles Dodgers: Luis Severino vs. Clayton Kershaw
The Dodgers may not be the best team the Yankees have faced so far this year, but they're certainly the highest profile, as New York continues its west coast run in taking on the National League's standard bearer in a three-game set this weekend.Tonight's opener features a terrific starting pitching matchup, with a future Hall of Famer going up against a righty with some of baseball's best stuff.
New York Yankees vs. Los Angeles Dodgers: Series Preview
After getting Thursday off, the Yankees are set to be back in action as they continue their West Coast road trip in Los Angeles.Starting tonight, the Yankees are set to take on the Dodgers in a three-game set. While not as far out ahead as they have been in past seasons (particularly their 111-win 2022), the Dodgers are once again atop the NL West - although they only tied with the Diamondbacks as of right now - as they look for a 10th division title in 11 seasons.
Dodgers News: Clayton Kershaw Stays Humble, Downplays 2014 MVP Season
Clayton Kershaw may be the humblest player in MLB history. For everything he's accomplished, and for all the success he's enjoyed as one of baseball's greatest pitchers of all time, not a single person would blame him for being even the littlest bit arrogant. But that's just not how Kershaw rolls.Kershaw hates when the spotlight is on him, and loves highlighting his teammates and coaches instead - and apparently his competitors, too.
ESPN: We got reports that the Yankees were going to be bringing along Giancarlo Stanton, Josh Donaldson, and Tommy Kahnle in the hopes of playing them against the Los Angeles Dodgers, and now, it's official. The Yankees have activated all three players from the injured list. The questions regarding those three players mainly involve Stanton only playing in one rehab game.
If the Yankees were mediocre in April, it's fair to say they righted the ship in May.Last month saw them finish just one game over .500- which is probably what fueled an incredibly low six percent approval rating for general manager Brian Cashman - but they were 19-10 in the month that just finished.
Yankees option Oswaldo Cabrera, activate trio of injured players
Oswaldo Cabrera's rookie breakout in 2022 was always a bit of a surprise.Although he was generally ranked in the top 10-15 on prospect rankings of the Yankees ' organization, he was not a Top 100 guy industry-wide.The Yankees needed help last August and the switch-hitting 23-year-old was having a productive year in Triple-A, so they gave him a shot.
Should the Yankees consider giving Estevan Florial another chance?
We have seen this movie before.Every time that Estevan Florial gets hot in Triple-A, a number of fans advocate for his call-up and for him to get an extended chance. When he gets to the majors, he almost always struggles, as his .579OPS in The Show indicates. However, it's hard to call a grand total of 63 plate appearances across four seasons an "extended chance."
Harrison Bader leaves game with hamstring tightness
The Harrison Bader Saga continues. The Yankee center fielder wins accolades of every kind when he's on the field, but has struggled to play a full season ever since debuting. He continues to struggle with that, being pulled from Monday's contest in Seattle with an apparent leg injury.Credit to Bader, his speed allowed him to beat out an infield single.
View From the Other Side: Yankee Questions from Joshua Diemert of Pinstripe Alley
Tonight the Blue Jays start a four-game series with the Yankees at Rogers. The Yankees are 23-19, which only has then fourth in the AL East, 2 games back of the Jays and 8 games back of the Rays. The Yankees are eighth in the AL in runs scored per game at 4.57 (Jays are sixth at 4.80).And they are seventh in the AL in runs allowed per game at 4.19 (Jays are eighth at 4.25).
The first month of the 2023 Yankees ' season is now in the books. It was a bit of an annoying one as after a solid first couple series, the Yankees slumped over the final couple weeks. They finished April at 15-14, which was tied for fourth in the AL East. This isn't going to be a look back at the Yankees' struggles or successes from March and April.
CBS Sports | Mike Axisa: The Yankees were very good in May, led by an on-fire Aaron Judge. They went from just .500 in April, to well above that now.Despite that, the Yankees didn't gain as much ground as you might expect in the AL East, thanks to the Rays and Orioles' hot starts to the season. However, there's still plenty of season left to go, and here are some things that could go in their favor and help the Yankees close the gap in the division.
I guess you can't win them all.But on a night when Clarke Schmidt, and then the bullpen, held Seattle scoreless through nine, an offense that dropped an Alexander Hamilton on the Mariners each of the previous two nights should have scraped together a run or two.Alas.George Kirby and the M's were up to the challenge this evening, and they scrapped out a 1-0 win in extras.
New York Yankees @ Seattle Mariners: Clarke Schmidt vs. George Kirby
After taking the first two games of this three-game set in Seattle, both in convincing fashion, New York goes for the trifecta tonight.A win moves the Bronx Bombers to a season-high 12 games above .500and sends them to the Thursday offday riding high, before going to LA this weekend to face the Dodgers (where all of Giancarlo Stanton, JOsh Donaldson, and Tommy Kahnle seem ready to join them).
MiLB.com | Matt Kardos: Three Yankees made rehab appearances with Double-A Somerset yesterday, and at least two of them seem like good bets to return to the bigs when the Yankees fly to Los Angeles on Friday for a weekend set with the Dodgers.Third baseman Josh Donaldson and reliever Tommy Kahnle have played in multiple rehab games over the past week and told Kardos that assuming all goes well in the next couple days, they plan to rejoin the Yankees in LA.
The past week got off to a bit of a bumpy start with the Yankees dropping two out of three to the Orioles in the Bronx in a series loss that featured one of the worst innings you'll ever see in the Bronx.New York then fell in its series opener with San Diego before rebounding to win three straight games in exciting fashion!
New York Times | Tyler Kepner: Luis Severino has returned, and Carlos Rodón is on his way. That was enough to have the Times dig into the Yankees rotation moving forward. As the article notes, "no lineup would relish facing Gerrit Cole, Nestor Cortes, a full-strength Carlos Rodón and Severino in a short series."
CBS Sports | R.J. Anderson: The Yankees had an injury scare yesterday, as first baseman Anthony Rizzo was removed from the game with a neck injury after tagging out Fernando Tatís Jr. on a strike-em-out-throw-em-out double play to end the sixth inning.Later in the contest, the organization announced that Rizzo had left the game for "precautionary reasons" and would undergo testing.
Reflecting on a May series between the Padres and Yankees in 2019
A lot can change across a four-year period in Major League Baseball.Contending rosters can quickly spiral and crumble, while rebuilding teams find their next wave of talent.Windows open and close, and dynasties rise and fall. With the San Diego Padres in town for a three-game set, we have a tangible example with a comparison right there to be made, as exactly four years ago, the Yankees and Padres also met for a three-game series at Yankee Stadium.
James Wood has all five tools - power, contact ability, speed, a strong arm and glove.(John McDonnell/The Washington Post) At some point in their retelling, the memories start to sound like myths. There was a travel baseball game in Frederick, Md.The kid in the batter's box, no older than 10, crushed a homer that soared way past the fence and into the top of a tree.
MLB Trade Rumors | Steve Adams: Yankees third baseman Josh Donaldson has been hobbled by a hamstring strain suffered in early April. The days have passed, and he has encountered a couple of setbacks along the way. However, he seems set to start a new rehab assignment - one that he's actually seeking to complete this time.
New York Daily News | Gary Phillips: After spending the last few months down in Tampa, Carlos Rodón has rejoined the Yankees in New York as he continues to recover from a balky back. The latest news on that front is good news, as the lefty played catch and made throws up to 120 feet at Yankee Stadium yesterday.
Yankees Mailbag: Stanton in the outfield, Schmidt's future, and policing baseballs
Good afternoon everyone, it's time to dive back into the mailbag and answer some of your questions.Remember to send in your questions for our weekly call by e-mail to pinstripealleyblog [at] gmail [dot] com. This is a bit of a two-parter, so let's address the opening statement first. While I'm sure most doubt that Giancarlo Stanton will be seeing much of the outfield, especially after this latest injury, the Yankees are outwardly still projecting that he will be in the rotation there.
After ending April on a three-game losing streak, the Yankees have been solid in May, holding their own in tough intra-divisional matchups against the Rays and Blue Jays and taking series against the weak A's and Guardians.A lot of that has been due to the resurgence of Anthony Rizzo, the one constant presence in the middle of the Yankees' order this season.
MLB Trade Rumors | Darragh McDonald: Yesterday afternoon, the Yankees placed starting catcher Jose Trevino on the injured list with a left hamstring strain. To replace him on the active roster, they promoted catcher Ben Rortvedt.Originally acquired from the Yankees as part of the deal that sent Gio Urshela and Gary Sánchez (who, coincidentally, was just added to the active roster by the New York Mets) to the Twins for Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Josh Donaldson, Rortvedt has yet to actually make an appearance for the Yankees: an oblique injury and knee surgery sidelined him at the start of the 2022 season, and an aneurysm in his shoulder required surgery in February.
Yankees lose Jose Trevino to hamstring strain, call up Ben Rortvedt
The first couple months of 2023 have not been particularly healthy ones for the Yankees.Since the start of spring training, they've lost Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge, Josh Donaldson, Harrison Bader, Oswald Peraza, Carlos Rodón, Luis Severino, Tommy Kahnle, Jonathan Loáisiga, Ian Hamilton, Lou Trivino, and Frankie Montas to the injured list, and the only ones to make a successful comeback to the bigs thus far have been Judge and Bader (Severino is on track to return Sunday).
As the 2023 regular season continues, here are three things we'll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world throughout the day today: 1. Freeman approaching milestone: Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman sits at 299 career home runs. With his next trip around the bases, he'll become just the 155th player in MLB history to hit 300 home runs in his career, joining Miguel Cabrera, Nelson Cruz, Giancarlo Stanton, , , Evan Longoria, Paul Goldschmidt, and Nolan Arenado as the only active players to reach the milestone.
Jake Bauers is trying to prove he is worthy of an extended shot with the Yankees
The New York Yankees are slowly getting soldiers back in their lineup.Harrison Bader and Aaron Judge are back with the team, and Josh Donaldson and Giancarlo Stanton should follow relatively soon. However, their offense is still inconsistent and prone to long stretches of mediocrity. That means the Yankees will often try to catch lightning in a bottle by giving playing time to reclamation projects.
At the time I'm writing this, the Tampa Bay Rays are 29-9, 4.5 games up on the AL East. They're the toast of baseball, and although I wish we didn't have to heap praise on the franchise, credit is due - they've played terrific baseball. They lead the world in runs, home runs, ERA and wRC+, which if it held up for the entire year would be the best mark in baseball history.
The Yankees defense isn't the strength it was last year
Looking back, the 2022 Yankees were a team that, despite its high-performing starting rotation and powerful (albeit inconsistent) lineup, ought to be known primarily for its defensive prowess. No matter how you look at it, their defense was elite: their 129 Defensive Runs Saved led the league by more than 50 runs (the Dodgers came in second with "just" 86), their 7.0 UZR/150 was more than two-thirds of a point better than the second-place Cardinals, and their 23 Outs Above Average ranked fifth.
Andres Chaparro keeps forcing himself into the Yankees' 2023 plans
When discussing the Yankees ' most prominent infield prospects before the season, everybody focused on three names: Anthony Volpe, Oswald Peraza, and Oswaldo Cabrera.Well, most people thought the latter would be more of an outfield option, which has been the case so far. However, there is a name that flew somewhat under the radar, probably because he was not as close to the majors as the other three.
ClosePreviously a Staff Writer at Bleacher Report Cornell University graduate
Carlos Rodon's debut with the New York Yankees has hit another snag.Rodon said Friday that his back issue is "chronic," and he will have a cortisone shot next week in hopes that it speeds up the recovery process.
Despite the tragic way their season ended, the 2019 Yankees will always have a place in my heart. Not only was it my first season writing for Pinstripe Alley, the team was simply a blast to watch.Much like the 2013 squad six years prior, injuries hit early and often, but much like the bunny with the battery in those commercials, the Yankees just kept on ticking.
Even after a breath of fresh air via a win over the Guardians last night, there's no question - things are bad.Last place is last place.I'm not here to tell you they're not bad, either. It's not too early to be seriously worried. Many of the holes on this team aren't necessarily things that we can expect to positively regress to the mean, and all else aside, it's clear that this is not the kind of juggernaut that we've been somewhat conditioned to expect for much of the Aaron Judge era.
Frustrated with the Yankees? Help is not on the way
It's early May, but it's never too early to panic if you are a fan.Calls for change come quickly when players struggle on the big stage, and there's been a whole lot of struggling going on in the Yankees' lineup. With Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Josh Donaldson all down with injuries (as well as Harrison Bader until today), the offense is filled with too many below-average major league hitters and young players going through growing pains as they establish themselves.
New York Yankees: Trouble in the Bronx but fans should be patient
The New York Yankees are in a slump.Heading into Monday's action, they had lost three series in a row, were 3-7 in their last 10 games, and were blown out by the Philadelphia Phillies 15-2 on Sunday. They are currently in last place in the AL East. But it's not time to panic. The New York Yankees have a lot of talent, and they are expected to return to form soon.
