The Malaysian government plans to slash the number of foreign workers to encourage local hiring and raise incomes, with significant changes to visa regulations coming in June.

Generations of foreign workers in the GCC countries have significantly contributed to the workforce, including labourers, construction workers, household staff, security personnel, and cleaners, all vital to building the modern infrastructures that Gulf nations are known for. Millions consider the Gulf their home, despite holding nationalities from other countries.

If ministers do decide to apply the changes to arrivals from 2020, this would make government policy in the area more robust even than that sought by the Conservatives, who have suggested dating it to 2021.

Spain's population has soared by 75,865 to a record high of 49,153,849, driven largely by an influx of foreign self-employed workers.
