Foreign workers behind 'half' of record-breaking Danish employment figures
Briefly

The number of employed individuals in Denmark rose for the 22nd consecutive month in May, totaling 3,056,200 as employment grew by 1,000. An additional 33,400 people are unemployed compared to the previous year. Employment growth matches figures from the same period in 2024. The private sector experienced substantial growth, particularly in health and social care, which employs the highest numbers. Factors contributing to job growth include a rise in senior workers and an influx of foreign labor, despite recent economic uncertainties due to new tariffs from the US.
Jesper Juul Borre, head economist of Arbejdernes Landsbank, mentioned, "Uncertainty has skyrocketed after news of new tariffs from the US, but employment rose by another 6,400 people in the first two months after the tariffs were announced. The labour market is doing well, and we can by no means rule out the possibility of breaking more employment records in the future."
Jesper Grunnet Lauridsen, a labour market economist from the 3F labour union, stated, "Around half of the rise in employment over the past three years is down to the fact that more seniors are staying in the labour market, and around half is fuelled by foreign labour."
Statistics Denmark revealed that the number of employed people in Denmark rose for the 22nd month consecutively in May, marking an increase of 1,000 to a total of 3,056,200 employed.
Employment in the private sector saw the largest rise with an increase of 30,300, with health and social care being the industry employing the most people.
