Without passports, citizenship or legal recognition, they live in a state of uncertainty. From finding work and accessing education, to simply existing within a system that does not officially recognise them, stateless people face endless bureaucratic barriers.
U.S. president Donald Trump shared a racist video on his Truth Social account in which former American president and first lady Barack and Michelle Obama were depicted as apes. I was unsurprised, yet nonetheless disgusted. U.S. senator Jon Ossoff also found the video unacceptable. He said during a rally in Atlanta that Donald Trump was "posting about the Obamas like a Klansman."
To combat these abuses, EFF is proud to support the "ICE Out of My Face Act." This new federal bill would ban ICE and CBP agents, and some local police working with them, from acquiring or using biometric surveillance systems, including face recognition technology, or information derived from such systems by another entity. This bill would be enforceable, among other ways, by a strong private right of action.
It should be obvious by now that the Trump administration's effort to remove large numbers of people who entered the country illegally is not only built on lies, but is doing far more harm than good. There is clear public support for Trump's effort to secure the border, but immigration reform has three parts, not one. It must include fixing the asylum system and creating more paths to legal status.
