Casa Gruta, designed by Salvador Román Hernández and Adela Mortera Villarreal, is an architectural project in Valladolid, Yucatán that blends sculptural form with natural influences. It seeks to create a sanctuary-like environment reminiscent of caves, emphasizing the fleeting nature of time through the interplay of light and shadow. The design reflects the Yucatán's geological formations with gray-green pigmented concrete, local cedar wood, and golden hardware, each element symbolizing the connection to the land. Entrances and passages are crafted to evoke sensory experiences, leading visitors through an engaging journey that references traditional Mayan purification rituals.
The design of Casa Gruta explores perception and scale, evoking a sense of refuge reminiscent of caves, challenging the relationship between the ephemeral and the eternal.
Casa Gruta, with its simplified materiality and dynamic colors, responds to the Yucatán Peninsula’s geological characteristics, allowing light and shadow to become integral to the experience.
