Maria at the beach on a perfect summer day: Carol Allen-Storey's best photograph
Briefly

Defying the Myth illuminates the challenges and resilience of single mothers caring for children with disabilities, highlighting the profound impact on their families and everyday lives.
Annalisa, the mother of Maria, who has Down syndrome and autism, had to set aside her own dreams and ambitions due to the intensive care needs of her children.
Many primary carers feel isolated and lack support, as expressed by each mother I visited, which led to a deeper connection with them through shared experiences and daily life.
The project began after I documented families in poverty, and each family I worked with in Defying the Myth taught me about loyalty, strength, and the love they nurture daily.
