For the first time in its 145-year history, UC Davis viticulture and enology students can sell their wines due to a law granting this privilege. Previously, thousands of gallons of student-made wine went to waste as public institutions couldn’t sell wine. The 2020 legislation signed by Governor Newsom introduced the possibility of selling up to 20,000 gallons annually through a nonprofit, Hilgard631. Students recently debuted a collection of wines, marking a significant advancement in practical applications of their studies and connecting them with the community.
Wine production students at UC Davis have now been empowered to share and sell their own wines thanks to new legislation, allowing public sale for the first time.
The recent law enables UC Davis to produce and sell student-created wines through a nonprofit, providing a significant hands-on experience for students.
Before legislation changed, thousands of gallons of wine produced by students ended up going to waste. This law changes everything for our students' learning.
The nonprofit Hilgard631, named after the founder of UC Davis' agriculture program, signifies not just a new chapter in education but also a bridge to community engagement.
