Lead researcher, UniSA's Dr Ben Singh, states, 'Regular physical activity provides significant physical and mental health benefits. It plays a key role in preventing and managing chronic disease, such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer, and it also reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety.' This underscores the essential role that physical activity plays in employee health.
The study found that a gamified workplace wellness program, the '15 Minute Challenge,' led to substantial increases in physical activity, with 95% of participants meeting or exceeding activity guidelines.
Dr Ben Singh emphasizes the importance of integrating physical activities into workplaces, noting, 'With the majority of adults spending much of their waking time working, workplaces present a unique opportunity to promote health and well-being.'
During the six-week challenge, participants' average daily physical activity increased by 12 minutes, equating to 85 minutes weekly, significantly contributing to better fitness, energy, and overall health.
