'I started running during COVID and lost four stone' - Alan O'Reilly AKA Carlow Weather on his fitness journey
"I got a weather station, cheap and decided to register the domain carlowweather.com, set up the website and get the weather station to talk to the website. It started off as just a tech project really and then 2010 came and we had the big snow and we had two cold spells actually, and my weather station was dropping live updates every 60 seconds so it got a bit of at traction online."
"I was an IT person sitting at a desk all day. I wasn't really doing much exercise but I decided I needed to get fit, and I got roped into doing a bootcamp class. It went from there and I lost four stone. Then during COVID I really got into the fitness and like I broke 40 minutes for a 10km run."
Alan O'Reilly created a local weather service by installing an inexpensive home weather station and registering carlowweather.com, linking the station to a website for live data. The project began as a technical experiment but attracted significant attention during the 2010 heavy snow and subsequent cold spells when the station supplied live updates every 60 seconds. O'Reilly worked in IT and began a fitness transformation in 2018 after joining a bootcamp class, losing four stone and improving running performance, including breaking 40 minutes for a 10km run during the COVID period.
