Costco raises pay above $30 an hour for many, as Teamsters threatens strike
Briefly

Costco is increasing pay for many workers to over $30/hour as contract negotiations loom with its unionized employees. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents about 18,000 Costco workers, and their current contract expires soon, with a strike authorized if talks fail. CEO Ron Vachris announced a $1 raise for store clerks and assistants starting March, with further annual increases. Entry-level workers will see a 50 cent rise to $20/hour. The union argues the pay hike is a response to their demands, emphasizing that nonunion workers lack essential benefits and protections.
The powerful International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents about 18,000 Costco employees, or roughly 8% of the company's U.S. workers. Their current collective-bargaining contract expires at the end of Friday.
In March, hourly wages for store clerks and assistants at the top of the pay scale will go up by $1 to $30.20 an hour, rising by another $1 each year after that.
