Warner Bros. has officially reverted its streaming service branding back to HBO Max. The change is reflected on Max.com, which redirects users to hbomax.com. Updates are also visible in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Users do not need to download a new app; updates occur automatically. HBO Max originally launched in 2020 to consolidate HBO's streaming services but rebranded to Max in 2023, an unpopular move. Warner Bros. is currently restructuring following its merger with Discovery.
Max.com now redirects to hbomax.com, and both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store have been updated too. The App Store includes a new version of the app with a simple patch note: "Same app. New-ish name. The plot twist everyone has been waiting for: Max is now HBO Max."
HBO Max launched in 2020 in an attempt to consolidate HBO's messy streaming options and give Warner Bros. a single platform to rival Netflix and Disney Plus. It became Max in 2023, a rebrand that was met with immediate derision and has since been seen as an all-time screw-up on par with New Coke.
Warner Bros. merged with Discovery, and is currently in the process of splitting back into two separate companies, though along different lines. Soon HBO and the rest of the company's movie and TV studios will come together in one organization, while CNN, Discovery Plus, and the other sports and news brands will split off in another.
