As streaming platforms rapidly evolved over the past five years, Buffering emerged to chronicle these changes. It has documented the rise of major services like Disney+, Apple TV+, and the struggles of others like Quibi that failed to last. The newsletter has also highlighted Netflix's ongoing challenges against tech giants Amazon and Apple, and noted the emergence of free streaming platforms like Tubi and the Roku Channel. The exploration of these dynamics provides insights into the shifting landscape of digital content distribution and the impact of industry occurrences such as the COVID pandemic and various mergers.
Five years on, while Quibi is no more, those four other services are still very much around, as is one other thing: Buffering.
Buffering aimed to serve as a battle guide to the conflicts to come as the streaming wars were just starting to pick up speed.
We've also documented Netflix's own rollercoaster ride, as it responded to both its new streaming competitors and the continued well-funded resolve of its tech-based rivals.
One thing is certain: The last few years have not been boring.
