Over the last decade, Facebook's usage among Gen Z has significantly declined from 71% to 32%, highlighting a shift in social media preferences. Despite this decline, Facebook Marketplace has emerged as a key feature for the remaining users, attracting over one billion participants. Its appeal lies in facilitating local buying and selling, with a focus on sustainability and financial savings. The recent partnership with eBay is expected to boost sales further, indicating Facebook’s strategy to monetize the platform effectively while users find success through side hustles.
"Marketplace offers both," said Yoo-Kyoung Seock, a professor at the College of Family and Consumer Sciences at the University of Georgia.
In January, Facebook Marketplace announced a partnership with eBay that will allow select listings to appear on the platform in the U.S., Germany, and France.
