San Jose faces legal heat over mental health crisis calls - San Jose Spotlight
""We are hoping that the letter will prompt the city to send the experts within the city on its emergency response system to join our conversation and our negotiations with the county," Susan Mizner, director emeritus of the ACLU's disability rights program, told San José Spotlight."
""We believe collaboration - particularly with the county - not court action, is the best way to address these issues," City Attorney Susana Alcala Wood stated regarding the city's approach to mental health emergency responses."
Civil rights organizations are increasing legal pressure on San Jose regarding mental health emergency calls. They allege the city is violating federal disability law by not diverting enough calls to mental health professionals. A recent letter to Mayor Matt Mahan from local watchdog group Silicon Valley De-Bug claims the city is not ensuring equal access to emergency services. While county officials have engaged in negotiations, San Jose has not participated since December. The city attorney stated efforts have been made to increase calls to the mental health crisis line 988.
