A California college town loses its seminal sandwich shop
Briefly

Gus's Grocery, a longtime favorite in San Luis Obispo known for its oversized sandwiches, has closed its doors permanently after a challenging year. Despite initial hopes following a health inspection setback due to a rodent infestation, the restaurant struggled to regain business. Owner Shannon Koester attempted to rally community support through a GoFundMe campaign, but the fundraising fell short of the $13,000 goal required for necessary repairs. The shop, once a vibrant icon for local students and residents, is now left empty, marking the end of an era.
Though he declined to elaborate on the record, a work crew member expressed sadness over the restaurant's demise, recognizing it as an icon whose quiet end - while not a total surprise - was still abrupt.
In August, the sandwich shop made headlines for reasons no local restaurant owner wants to, especially in the heart of its busiest time of year: Gus's failed a health inspection report because of a rodent infestation and was forced to close down for a day.
Shannon Koester, the owner and general manager, noted that business had recovered a little during the holidays. "It's still been really slow," she added.
At the time, the goal was to raise $13,000 to make some necessary repairs to the restaurant to keep it going, Koester said. While the owner said the fundraising results were mixed, she was optimistic the goal could be reached in time.
