VIDEO: Santa Cruz Harbor invaded by anchovies
Briefly

The Santa Cruz harbor is experiencing a significant influx of anchovies for the second time within five months, raising concerns among harbor officials about a potential fish die-off. Typically, aerators are utilized to pump oxygen into the water when anchovies appear in large numbers, but current maintenance on these machines poses a risk. Harbor Patrol emphasizes monitoring fish behavior, noting an absence of stress signs currently due to favorable temperature and oxygen levels, while officials are prepared to act quickly if conditions worsen.
Harbor officials are worried about the possibility of a fish die-off. That's because usually when anchovies show up in these numbers, aerators are brought in to pump oxygen into the water but right now, the machines are in the shop for their annual maintenance.
They'll be kind of frantically jumping around. And we're not seeing that type of stress on the fish right now," said Sean Rothwell, Santa Cruz Harbor Patrol.
If conditions change or the fish start to die off, they will work to get the aerators back quickly.
