The inspection identified some necessary repair work to retrofit the west half of the tunnel to ensure it stays safe, SFMTA spokesperson Erica Kato stated. "We are beginning to inform the public immediately. ..." More extensive repairs will be needed in the next five to 10 years.
The work follows a February report from engineering firm HNTB that found cracks in the walls of the 2.27-mile-long tunnel, along with water intrusion, clogged drains and fractured rods that support its ceiling.
During the project, all service through the tunnel will be suspended, with trains on the K, L and M lines turning back toward Embarcadero Station at Castro. Riders will need to catch bus shuttles.
SFMTA also said it will add S shuttle trains between Castro and Embarcadero during the closure to accommodate riders wishing to continue their journey.
