The city's 2024 rise in pedestrian deaths continues, with NYPD and the Department of Transportation reporting an alarming 28 percent increase in killings of people walking on city streets this year.
Jon Orcutt, advocacy director for Bike New York, stated, 'The erosion of street safety in the city is shocking. We need to reestablish respect for basic rules of the road, and targeted enforcement needs to be part of how we do that.'
The DOT noted that 87 pedestrians were killed between Jan. 1 and Sept. 23, exceeding the average fatality rates during the Vision Zero years and highlighting the serious need for improved safety measures.
Despite the increase in fatalities, the DOT emphasized that New York's pedestrian fatality numbers are trending down from historic highs before Vision Zero, hinting at mixed progress in overall street safety.
