Charles Phan, the influential chef behind San Francisco's iconic Vietnamese restaurant, the Slanted Door, died unexpectedly at 62 from cardiac arrest. A Vietnamese immigrant, Phan opened the Slanted Door in 1995, earning significant acclaim and a loyal customer base over nearly 30 years. His family shared heartfelt memories about his passion for food, storytelling, and tennis games. Despite his passing, management plans to keep the restaurant's legacy alive as they prepare for its reopening, emphasizing the continuation of Phan's culinary vision within the community.
To our loyal guests, he was the creator of unforgettable meals and memories," the Phan family said in a statement on Instagram.
While this was sudden and shocking to many of us, we will endure as the Slanted Door has for almost 30 years," Slanted Door Group said in a separate statement.
