Despite rising prices, Pakistan's love for sugar remains unshaken
Briefly

Despite a decline in overall inflation in Pakistan, sugar prices have surged by nearly 22% recently, driven by increased demand during Ramadan. Consumers like Ayesha Khan prioritize sugar purchases for their families, viewing it as a necessity. While the government works to control prices, many shoppers remain unconcerned due to stable prices in other essential commodities like milk, wheat, and rice. This relative stability allows consumers to feel the pinch of sugar prices less acutely, especially during a festive season known for indulgence in sweet treats.
General inflation in the country has trended downwards over the past year, with inflation crashing from 23.06 percent in February 2024 to 1.5 percent in February this year.
The price of sugar has increased by nearly 22 percent, rising from 140 rupees per kilogramme to 171 rupees per kilogramme in the second week of March.
Many customers said that the increase in sugar prices was only a pinch, not a punch, to their wallets, thanks to stability in prices for other key commodities.
Ayesha Khan, a mother of four, notes that sugar is a necessity for her family's diet, particularly during Ramadan when sweet treats are popular.
