Aslam's Rasoi, an Indian restaurant in San Francisco's Mission District, is set to close in May following a 52% rent increase, rising operational costs, and decreased sales. Opened in April 2006 by Mohammed Aslam and his son, the restaurant became known for its Northern Indian and Pakistani dishes. The family is considering relocating but must see improved sales to fund potential startup costs. Sonia Aslam reflects on the emotional toll the situation has taken on the family, who has invested significant time and love into the establishment over the years.
"It's just sad seeing the business struggling to this extent," Sonia Aslam, daughter-in-law of founder Mohammed Aslam, told Mission Local. "We've tried to keep the restaurant going for all these years. We sacrificed all our time. We put our love into the business."
The family, which also owns Rasoi Restaurant & Lounge in Burlingame, hopes to reopen Aslam's in a smaller location but will only be able to do so if sales improve in the next two months, giving it capital for startup costs.
Aslam's Rasoi has been in the Valencia corridor since April 2006, serving lovingly prepared Northern Indian and Pakistani food to hungry locals.
The cavernous restaurant was a place for both group gatherings and intimate dinners overlooking bustling Valencia Street and was known for its made-to-order naan and marinated lamb chops.
