A recent survey by Hopelab and the Born This Way Foundation reveals that LGBTQ+ youth feel significantly safer expressing their identities online, with 44% feeling secure compared to just 9% in person. The study, involving over 1,200 respondents aged 15 to 24, highlighted that nonbinary youth are particularly inclined to disclose their gender identity online. Furthermore, the majority expressed concern over potential governmental restrictions on LGBTQ+ content online. The findings emphasize the need for safe digital environments and the profound support LGBTQ+ youth receive from online friendships.
"It's essential to recognize that online relationships, especially in LGBTQ+ communities, are deeply meaningful," Claudia-Santi F. Fernandes, Vice President of Research and Evaluations at Born This Way Foundation told The Advocate.
Those who reported access to in-person spaces that were very supportive of their LGBTQ+ identity had nearly half the rates of depression as those who didn't (28 percent vs. 53 percent).
