Fed Cuts Interest Rates by 25 Basis Points
"The Federal Reserve board met and decided Wednesday that the Fed will cut interest rates by a quarter point. The move sets its benchmark lending rate to between 3.75 percent and 4 percent, the lowest level since 2022. In remarks following the Fed's meeting, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell indicated that it is unclear whether the Fed will further lower interest rates in December, citing differing views among the Fed's board of directors. "There were strongly differing views about how to proceed in December," said Powell."
"Powell also contrasted the dot-com bubble of the late 1990s with the current AI boom, noting that AI companies have real earnings. "In the 1990s and dot-com, these were ideas rather than companies," Powell stated. "There was a clear bubble there." Powell also stated that the Fed is "very carefully" watching layoffs resulting from the adoption of artificial intelligence by companies. The tech giant Amazon announced this week that it will lay off 14,000 employees in preparation for AI adoption."
The Federal Reserve reduced its benchmark federal funds rate by a quarter point, setting the range at 3.75 percent to 4 percent, the lowest since 2022. Chairman Jerome Powell said the board is uncertain about additional rate cuts in December because officials hold strongly differing views. Powell compared the current AI boom to the 1990s dot-com era, asserting that AI companies have real earnings while many dot-com firms were primarily ideas. The Fed is closely monitoring layoffs tied to AI adoption, and Amazon announced plans to cut about 14,000 jobs. The federal government shutdown will weigh on activity while it persists but should reverse when it ends.
